A Dilemma

As you probably know if you’re reading this, I have several children who are involved in Scouting. The worst thing about Scouting, as far as I’m concerned, is the badges. Not the working towards them or the receiving them, but the sewing-on-of-them. I really, really don’t like sewing. When I was 11, we had to sew a wall-hanging in school, as part of Domestic Science (now called Home Economics, I believe, unless they’ve changed it again). Fifteen years later, my wall-hanging was discovered in the back of a cupboard in my grandmother’s house; it still wasn’t finished. My feelings about sewing have not changed since then.

This isn’t a problem when it comes to George’s badges for Cubs; he’s got agile fingers and is naturally good at sewing. In fact he’s even been known to sew on badges for other people (at £1 a badge) - but he’ll only do it when he feels like it, so mostly the person who ends up sewing on Freddy’s badges for Beavers is…

Me.

The number of badges that Freddy gets from Beavers is largely down to the Beavers leader. The Beavers leader decides on the programme, decides what badges the group will work on, orders the badges, gives them out. And Freddy’s Beavers leader is…

Me.

Can you see my problem here?

Freddy will only be in Beavers for another few months before he moves up to Cubs. But by that time, Jack will be a Beaver. Bad planning or what?

It doesn’t hold though! The badges are too stiff, and they don’t flex with the fabric of the uniform, so the iron-on stuff doesn’t work!

Anyway, I’m not much better with the iron-on stuff than I am with a needle and thread…I have been known to get more iron-on stuff on the iron, towels and me than on the fabrics I’m supposed to be sticking

Can’t you glue them with superglue? There must be *something* out there that will hold on badges!

Yeah, thread…

Anyway, given what I can do with iron-on webbing, do you really think I should be trusted with superglue? LOL

At least the Scout ones are usually small, unlike the ju-jitsu badges, which can be seen in orbit.

I don’t mind sewing badges. But I do mind when I get told that the badges need to be sewn in a certain place and a certain way (SJA Cadets upper arm ones, this is.) If it’s that important they could get it done professionally.
