Barney’s rough weekend
Barney loves to read. This is a good thing (a great thing!) but it does have its downside. If he goes to bed with a book, he’ll finish it before he falls asleep if he can. That means he often stays awake until 11 p.m. or later - so he just doesn’t get enough sleep. And he’s done that several times in the last few days, so by tonight, he was exhausted.
The boys didn’t do a great deal of work last week - we’d other things to do, the weather was too nice to stay indoors, etc. - so today, since it was raining, we did some catching-up. For Barney, that meant a couple of hours on quadratic and cubic graphs. I like maths, but those? - yeuch. Barney doesn’t mind them as much as I do, but they’re still not his idea of fun (and he does consider most of what he does in maths to be fun).
Yesterday he managed to get himself killed on Runescape. This is, apparently, not as bad as it sounds: I’m told you don’t actually die but just lose most of your stuff and have to go back to square one, as it were. Still, not something he was aiming for.
And then there are the hormones… we’re seeing some very puberty-like behaviours - weepiness over small things that don’t go right, and some really quite startling mood-swings. So there’s definitely a bit of a hormone cocktail going on for him right now.
The final straw was that they didn’t get to watch all of the movie they chose this evening, because the DVD was all scratched up and kept freezing and restarting. That didn’t go down well with any of them.
All of which explains why Barney spent half an hour in my bed tonight, cradled in my arms and sobbing his poor little heart out - it was all just too much for him to cope with
He’s getting very grown-up - but he’s still a child, and he’s still my baby.

Aw
Oh well, for as long as he can have a good cry in his mums arms, he won’t go far wrong.
