You know that rule that says that if you have a bad day, it’s followed by a good day? Well, I’m here to tell you: not necessarily.
And that’s just talking about my family. Then there’s the world, which seems to be getting scarier by the minute.
Have you noticed the various announcements today about the ID card and database?
the new Identity and Passport Service, which will incorporate the current Passport Service, will be launched on April 1st. Yes, on Saturday
from later this year, if you want a new passport, you’ll have to attend a passport office for an interview, to be fingerprinted, and to have a background check run on you
if you get a passport any time from 2008 (or sooner - what would be the point in all that fingerprinting etc if it wasn’t going to be stored anywhere?), you’ll be added to the database whether you want that or not
if you don’t want an ID card, you’ll be allowed to opt out of it when applying for a passport until 2010
even if you opt out, you’ll have to pay for the card anyway
after 2010, you’ll have to have an ID card, even if you don’t apply for a passport
How will this affect you? Go and read at No2ID.
And I’m not even going to start on how the largest home-education organisation in the UK have just decided that it’s not worth stating any opposition to the removal of the right to immediate deregistration on demand

Aaarrrggghhh!!! This country gets scarier by the minute! We’re emigrating as soon as we have enough money, I think…that’s if we can get passports! :-P
We’ve the passports - and the citizenship for elsewhere; it’s the means to live there we haven’t got! If there was a decent job offer, we’d be off like a shot.
Can you point me in the direction of the removal of dereg rights please? Have a tonne of email I haven’t read so its probably in there somewhere but I have 2 days to do a weeks worth of jobs so trawling through ain’t gonna happen!
I am still gobsmacked about the passport thing, honestly how comes *no-one* has seemed to notice this? I bcc DH and a couple of friends on the emails I post about this and one of the friends thinks we’re paranoid. How can someone read this and *still* not get it?
It’s DfES guidance that’s changing, and they want to change it so that schools “consult” with the LEA before they remove a name from the register. The mentioned organisation have responded and chosen not to bother arguing with that bit
Been widely-discussed on the UKHE and Consult lists in the last 48 hours or so - though has not had so much as a mention on the EO list!
As to how people still don’t get it - there are an awful lot of people with their heads in the sand
*rolls eyes* Not on UKHE so thats how I missed that one then! I can guess I see why they aren’t arguing it as such, its only the guidance and its only consulting rather than a change in law but it comes back to heads in sand, one tiny step next to another and no-one will notice til they are asking permission to breathe let alone HE.
Don’t be fooled by “only” guidance - over here parents are currently being told there is no way to legally deregister - and that’s due to guidance, not legislation or even regulations. This step essentially takes us a step towards nobody being dereg’d, but rather being “authorised absence” - which means pupil regulations apply, which means SATS, attendance requirements, and NC, amongst other things.
