Back soon

Am about to start trying to update the blog to WordPress 2.0, so if you’re reading this on rss or atom, that’s where I’ve gone. Back soon (I hope).

*edit*
Ooo-kay…that was straightforward. Easiest WP upgrade yet. No problems with any of my plug-ins (except for one, solved very quickly once I’d actually read the instructions ;-)) and we’re back :-)

Was it worth it? What’s better?

Yes, I think it was worth it - especially since it really is an easy upgrade is so smooth. The only thing I had to do that wasn’t in the instructions was change my vars.php file and re-upload my smilies - but that’s because I have custom smilies.

The management stuff is better laid-out - there are huge improvements to the “write” page (includimg a preview that is truly a preview). And it is, apparently, faster. The Akismet spam plugin is excellent (and showed me just how much comment spam I’d managed to stop in its tracks by blacklisting phrases). But from what I understand, the major changes are in the background - and will make it easier for people to get much more creative with plugins and customisation.

you did read what I blogged about akismet though? It’s a terrible interface for keeping an eye out for false positives, and if someone trips it once on one of our akismetted blogs, they could end up unable to comment on any of them.

Still not convinced there is anything much to write home about, not that I’ve done it, only read about it and had a quick explore on another friends install.

I did read what you’d written about Akismet, but I haven’t had any issues with it. I’ve noticed a few other bloggers saying that the problems they had with false positives have improved in the last week, so maybe it’s learning? - I’m keeping a close eye anyway and will report back if I notice anything interesting.

Aksimet did catch a couple of real people on ours in the first few days, but once they have been allowed there has been no problem. My gripe with it is that it doen’t show all the caught spam (it seems to show a proportion) and it adds the newest spam to the bottom of the list so that you never get to see them. to check you have to check the databse itself (an easy enough task, but that’s not the point. However it does do a very good job at ctaching them

Apparently it shows the first 150 - though I’ve never got to that many before deleting them, so I’m not sure what it does when you delete them - does it show you the next 150, or does it delete the whole lot?

Mine shows the new spam at the top of the list, Chris; the stuff that’s there now is dated Sunday and Monday, and all the Monday stuff is above the Sunday stuff. I haven’t made any changes to the configuration. Is yours showing it the other way around? :-?
